The problem

The old platform buried complex request and approval workflows.

Supervisors, timekeepers, finance and employees all had to find their way through the same homepage, navigation, search and filtering.

The calls

  1. Find the problems

I studied the homepage structure, navigation menu, search and filtering, then listed and prioritized the old platform's critical issues using research documents and annotated screenshots.

  2. Agree a direction

We prepared several wireframe and mockup proposals and agreed one before moving on.

The approved concept accounted for every user type, so navigation stayed coherent across supervisors, timekeepers, financial managers and employees.

  3. Simplify the structure

Common elements were reshaped and clustered consistently, and the main menu held every key section.

  4. Rebuild the search

Search was rebuilt to query tags, names, topics and links.

  5. Hand over

Every asset was listed in a styleguide and component library, so other teams could build with it.

  6. Prototype everything

Each redesigned screen, form and component was prototyped, with InVision flows showing the real navigation between screens.

Results

  • A simpler platform logic and navigation
  • A reusable styleguide and component library
  • The client extended the engagement to redesign every screen and form

What I learned

I learned how to work with an international organization, and how to collaborate with different stakeholders, such as product managers and developers from different agencies and environments.
